Make money, start selling handmade vintage products on Etsy. How I got started on Etsy.

Ways to make money selling online.

Make money, start selling handmade vintage products Etsy.

While hunting for hot products at a citywide rummage sale a few weeks ago, I picked up a very well built button maker.

Model 225 2 1/4" American made button press

The seller wanted $60.00 for the button press, and a bunch of supplies.

After doing a quick search on Amazon, I came across the exact model of the one I found.  Holy smokes I was surprised at the retail price. See how much they cost new!

I offered her $35.00 for the button press with all of the supplies which she gladly accepted.

As I was driving home from the garage sales, I was thinking about that button press & how much money I was going to sell it for.

Then, some thoughts popped into my head.  I am all about buying low & selling high but if I could start making buttons to sell online, that would be a continuos revenue stream.

Rather than getting $100.00 - $150.00 for the press, I could be selling buttons for years making thousands.   This is when I decided to make my store.

Some key benefits of selling your handmade / vintage products on Etsy.

  • No membership fees.
  • 15 million buyers
  • Promotional tools to help get your store noticed.
  • Its cocts $0.20 to list an item for 4 months.
  • Once an item is sold, Etsy's cut is only 3.4% so you get to keep the most of your money
  • Better customers to deal with over eBay.
  • Etsy considers themselves a community, many shops work together to help promote each other & some shops put together teams.
  • Listing on Etsy is much faster than Amazon, there is only 1 page to fill out.
  • Listings can be tagged with keywords to help customers find your listings.
What you will need before selling on Etsy.

  • Valid credit card for verification purposes.

What can you sell on Etsy?

  • Etsy provides a marketplace for crafters, artits and collectors to sell their handmade creations, vintage goods ( at least 20 years old ) and both handmade and non-handmade commercial crafting supplies.

Start selling handmade or vintage products on Etsy.

Step 1 - Determine what you kind of product you are going to sell.

My sister sells custom bows in her Etsy store:  Kagome Charm Bow Boutique.

Since I stumbled across the button makers, It didn't take me very long to figure out what type of product I wanted to sell on Etsy

In my garage sale travels, I have found many great vintage video game magazines, strategy guides, comics, pokemon cards, D&D books, Sci-Fi books.   Many of these strategy guides & games are not worth much more than $2.00 - $4.00 so why not turn them into custom video game character buttons and sell them for $2.00 - $4.00 each?

I am sure if you think about it for a little while, you will be able to come up with your own products to make & sell online.   You could even buy the same button press & start making your own  button.
Teenage mutant ninja turtles TMNT custom video game button.

Step 2 - Create your Etsy store.

Since I am selling video game related buttons, I decided to go with the name BAselectstartbuttons, paying tribute to the last 4 button codes used in Contra for the NES.

Step 3 - Fill out the profile for your store.

Once your store is created, it is important to fill out all of the information, especially your store profile.

If you are unfamiliar with SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) I would recommend reading up on the subject if you really want to start making money selling online.

Remember to give your store some character by adding a banner and profile picture.

I quickly made this banner within about 10 minutes, it doesn't have to be fancy, just something noticeable.

Step 4 - Create store categories and add products.

ways to make money selling online sell handmade vintage etsy products

One of the nice things about Etsy, unlike Ebay & Amazon, you are encouraged to get creative with your products so make them standout.

Tips to help sell your products.

  • Use proper keywords in your titles.  If you are not using the proper keywords in your title, no one is going to find your products.
  • Use eye catching pictures to set yourself apart from the other sellers.  On Etsy, everyone is more artistic so make sure to bring your A game.
  • Use social media to promote your products.   Become active social media sites.  Google plus has all sorts of communities for promoting your products.

Step 5 - Fullfil Esty store orders.

Our Etsy store has not been open for very long and we have already started selling buttons.   The initial investment of $35.00 will be returned fairly quickly, after that it will all be profit.

If you decide to start selling handmade vintage product on Etsy.

Remember to stand out amongst the competition, respond to your customers messages promptly, and always treat your customer like they are the most important person in the world.

Tips to finding treasures for resale

Today, I went out and did some treasure hunting in Pittsburgh, PA.  I found a TON of stuff and got some great head cam footage which will eventually be up on my youtube channel the Armed to Sell Network

Regent Square, an upscale neighborhood where I am staying had their annual neighbor hood garage sales.   Pittsburgh is one of the places I am researching on setting up one of my stores so I was very excited to see what I could find.

One thing I found a lot of today was silver.   I found a bunch of sterling silver jewelry, sterling silver salt & pepper shakers, 7 sterling silver candlesticks, some Mexican sterling silver forkssterling silver letter opener & 1 gold cuff link.

How to find cheap silver coins, sterling silver jewelry, candlesticks, vase, plates & more at garage sales / thrift stores.

Finding silver coins, sterling silver jewelry and other items at garage sales & thrift stores is not as hard as one would think.  There are many treasures out there just waiting to be found.  The number one piece of advice that I can give if you are new to hunting for silver, gold and other precious metals  or items for resale is to do your research.

Check out my free research website list to help educate yourself on what to look for as well as identification of the things you find.

How to find cheap silver tip #1 - Know what US coins are silver.

US dimes dated 1964 and older are 90% silver.
US quarters dated 1964 and older are 90% silver.
US half dollars dated 1969 - 1965 are 40% silver.
US half dollars dates 1964 and earlier are 90% silver.
US large dollar coins dated 1964 and earlier are 90% silver with some exceptions of later dates with 40% silver content.

How to find cheap silver tip #2 - Know what sterling silver looks & sounds like.

When it comes to sterling silver jewelry, flatware & dishes, it is important to know what sterling silver looks like as well as how it sounds.

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% silver & 7.5% other metals, usually copper.

Sterling silver is usually stamped in some form, once again review my research website list for silver smith hallmarks & stamps.

It is a soft metal which can give you inside into whether or not is is silver or not.  Stamps usually look rounded like the metal is sloping in.

Weighted sterling is very thin and prone to denting.  Silver plated items do not dent easily.

When you tap on something sterling silver such as salt and pepper shakers, it will sound dull and does not reverberate like brass or copper does.

How to find cheap silver tip #3 - Pick up everything that you think could be sterling silver.

This tip works for many different things, not just silver.
If you think something is sterling silver, pick it up, pay attention to how it feels, note the weight and the sound when you put it back down.  Doing this will build a memory of the different metal types you are going to come across while looking for silver.

How to find cheap silver tip #4 - Have a loupe to check hallmarks.

How to find cheap silver tip #5 - Do not assume the seller knows that they have.

Many times when I go to garage sales or thrift stores, I find sterling silver marked dirt cheap because the seller does not know it is sterling silver or they just don't care.   Refer back to tip #3, pick everything up and check to see if it is silver.   If you don't pick it up, you won't find it.

How to find cheap silver tip #6 - Thrift stores have sterling silver as well.

I have found many sterling silver candlesticks & vases at thrift stores.  Many employees who price goods at thrift stores don't have a clue what sterling silver is which means you can score some great cheap silver if you are lucky enough to come across it before someone else does.

How to find cheap silver tip #7 - Do not listen to,  " It is just costume jewelry".

I don't know how many times I have been told that everything in the box is just costume jewelry to find out that there are 14K gold & sterling in little baggies for $1.00 each.    Put forth the extra effort, look and you shall find.

How to find cheap silver tip #8 - Go often.

The more garage sales & thrift stores you go to, the better your chances to find cheap gold & silver, the better chances you will find it.

How to find cheap silver tip #9 - Dig through boxes.

Dig through everything, you never know what box is going to have

How to find cheap silver tip #10 - Ask sellers directly if they have any gold or silver.

Asking a seller directly if they have any gold or silver may not be the cheapest way to get gold & silver but you will at least have the chance to get some.  When I am at garage sales, I always ask the sellers if they have any gold or silver they are interested in selling.  This requires you to know what the current spot prices are ( these again can be found in my research website list ).   Make them a fair offer and chances are you can score some below spot gold and silver.

How to find cheap silver final thought.

The cheap silver & gold is out there waiting to be found.  Usually, it takes hard work & perseverance, but sometimes all it takes is a little bit of luck.   Good luck at all of those garage sales & thrift stores, and remember, if you really want some gold or silver, you can always find some in the on Amazon.

How to start selling on Amazon. Create an Amazon seller account

How to start selling on Amazon.  Create an Amazon seller account.

Selling on Amazon is a great way to make money from home.

I have been selling on Amazon for over a year so I thought I would take some time out of my day to give you some tips on how to make money selling on Amazon.   Most of you are probably aware that eBay is a great place to sell used goods online, but did you know that Amazon is a great place to sell used goods as well?    I have sold over $50,000.00 in new and used goods on Amazon since I opened my Amazon store Sneaky Squirrel Games.

Invest in knowledge, check out these books.

How to start selling on Amazon.

Things to consider before selling on Amazon.

Before you just hop in and start trying to make money selling on Amazon, there are a few things that you should know.

  1. It is important to know what products sell on Amazon.  Make sure to check out my Article on How to find the best products to resale on Amazon in 2013.
  2. The Amazon payment system is not like eBay.  Instead of receiving your money instantly when a customer places an order, Amazon used a 2 week disbursement system, your money sits in your Amazon account until their system sends the money to your bank account.
  3. For the most part, listing products on Amazon is MUCH easier than listing products on eBay.  There are no pictures to take as the listings are already created for you.  The drawback to this, is that if there is no listing for your product, then you have to have a premium account in order to create a listing from scratch.
  4. When I first decided to start selling on Amazon, my sales skyrocketed through the roof.   I did over $5,000.00 in my first month.  This skyrocketing threw a red flag up on my account and Amazon suspended my account for 2 weeks to make sure that I was a legitimate seller.  2 weeks is a short suspension, most sellers who get this suspension get a month.   This suspension does not mean that you cannot sell on Amazon, it just means that you will not receive any disbursements during that time period.  Once your account is reviewed and Amazon has decided that you are a legitimate seller, your funds will be released.  It is a 1 time thing so don't worry if it happens to you.
  5. It is important to know what you want to sell on Amazon.   You can check out my Amazon's best seller article to find out where to research what to sell on Amazon.
  6. Amazon fees are higher than eBay, but they make up for that fact in the form of better customers, faster listing as well as faster sales ( if you are selling the right products ).
  7. If you are leaving eBay to sell on Amazon, know that for the most part, Amazon will side with the buyer just like eBay.
  8. You do not need a premium store to sell on Amazon.   That being said, if you do not have a pro merchant account, you will pay an extra $1.00 for every item you sell.  If you plan on selling more than 40 items a month, I highly recommend that you open up a pro merchant account.   The account costs $39.99 but will pay for itself if you sell 40 items.

How to restore old faded dry looking plastic.

If you have vintage plastic items that look dull, dry or faded there is one product on the market that will help bring your plastic back to life.   In the above video, we restored the plastic camera pads on an old SX-70 camera.  We purchased the SX-70 camera for $7.99 at a thrift store.  The dry faded pads on the camera made it look very bad.  We wiped the camera down with lemon oil, let the oil soak in and sold the camera for $99.99.    You can use lemon oil to restore almost any old dry faded looking plastic.  It works great for old composite plastic flatware as well.

Completed listings on eBay

Another great way to figure out how to find the best selling products is to use eBay's completed listings.
eBay's completed listings can help you figure out what products are currently selling for, give you a market price as well as help you research new items that you didn't even know were selling.

Step by step instructions:

ways to make money selling online

  • Type in the product you are interested in selling.   Remember to use keywords that best describe the product you want to sell.  You may also want to research the words that describe your item to ensure you are getting the proper data.

Hot product research tips

When you are trying to figure out what the best selling products are, remember to set your search to " Shipping + highest price "  as your search order.  This will put all of the high dollar items at the top of the list.    If you see products that have lots of green, you will want to add that to the list of products you want to sell.

That's all for now folks, remember, research is the key to being able to successfully find the best selling product to sell on Amazon & eBay.  The two ways I have mentioned in this article will put you on the right track to finding those products but it will take much more research and hard work to find those items, price them and get them sold.   Check out my other article on media scouting to help you weed out products when you are out in the field.

We recently wrote about former Navy man Adam Coleman, who passed up an opportunity to re-enlist to make online selling his full-time career. Since he attributes much of his love for “treasure hunting” to his mother, we decided to find out how she started her online selling career.
His mother, Doreen Coleman, has been selling on eBay for more than eight years.
Her eBay Store, Imetalconsignments, has about 600 items at any one time, most of which are considered hard-to-find mid-century products.

A variety of products made in the U.S.

If your mother’s lawn chair is frayed and threatens to drop guests on the ground, Doreen Coleman has listings for replacement webbing. If you’d rather dry your hair salon-style, Imetalconsignments can sell you a portable soft bonnet hair dryer.
Not only do the mid-1900s remind her of her childhood, Coleman also appreciates the construction of the products sold back then
From green dishware to retro furniture, this eBay seller has her niche figured out right down to the cocktail swizzle stick.
Not only do the mid-1900s remind her of her childhood, Coleman also appreciates the construction of the products sold back then and the sense of pride the U.S. had in its workmanship.
“I love the mid-century modern era, a time when almost everything was made in the USA,” she adds. “And that seems to be the direction my store has taken.”
Yet Coleman does tell people she’ll pretty much sell anything she can make money on, as long as it’s made in America, she reports. And now that more people are looking for American-made items, she believes her eBay Store will stay its course for a long time.

From ‘real job’ to real joy

As with most people, Coleman says she started selling online to supplement her income.
“I had what some people call ‘a real job,’ an ongoing joke in my household,” she quips.
For more than 20 years, the single mom owned a brick-and-mortar antique business. The summer seasons were profitable, but winter times were hard, so Coleman joined a co-op instead. For a rental fee, she could display her items in various shops throughout the area.
“Unfortunately, when that business decides to close its doors, there’s not much one can do,” she notes.
When the co-op no longer worked for Coleman, she found herself packing her items and going to work for someone else.
For more than 20 years, the single mom owned a brick-and-mortar antique business. The summer seasons were profitable, but winter times were hard
But in her “real job,” she missed retail sales. After a few years, she decided to try selling on eBay.
In the beginning, Coleman sourced her first listings with merchandise from thrift stores and garage sales, but then a friend approached her with an opportunity to help him liquidate his farm equipment.

Consignment venture starts niche

Not knowing yet what her niche market was going to be, Coleman took advantage of the chance to be a consignor.
“It was a pretty brave step,” she notes. “Luckily, every transaction went smoothly.”
Selling farm equipment can be risky if you don’t know the consignee well and he or she doesn’t give you full disclosure on the equipment. For that reason, Coleman suggests sellers know and trust those they might do business with on such large-scale equipment.
“One would think selling full-sized farm equipment would be tough online, but it was one of the easiest items to sell,” she says.
It seemed Coleman found her niche, so she named her business Imetalconsignments. But when her friend’s farm equipment was all sold off, she had to find other farmers to sell for. That only lasted so long. When those wells dried up, Coleman went back to selling her own merchandise.
“Lesson learned: Don’t be afraid to change directions of your business,” she says.

Making the switch to full time

Eventually, Coleman found herself bringing in more income through online sales than through her “real job.” She was ready to take her business to full-time status, but still had a few reservations to overcome.
As a single mother, giving up the security of a regular paycheck can be frightening, so she called her oldest son, Adam, who was serving in the Navy.
“Lesson learned: Don’t be afraid to change directions of your business”
“He asked me a single question: ‘Do you love selling online?’” she recalls.
She responded positively, so he told her to do it. Plus, her son agreed to back her up financially if things went wrong, and that gave Coleman the security she needed to move forward.

Selling worldwide

Though Coleman had 20 years of experience selling antiques in her town, it was a new learning curve for her to do it online.
“Buying merchandise for my brick-and-mortar business was based on my local clientele,” Coleman adds. “Now I’m selling to the whole world.”
This meant the merchant selling on eBay had to change her buying habits to appeal to customers from as far away as Australia.
“The buzz in this small town is I’m keeping the post office open,” she says.
While she laughs about the joke, Coleman notes that the U.S. Postal Service’s new price increase will make her rethink how she ships. However, she loves eBay’s ShipSaver Insurance program, which is important for those who buy and sell rare, breakable products.
Recently, the eBay seller bought a building across from the post office. It’s just big enough to house her inventory and give her some studio space. Plus, getting her orders out in a timely manner is only a matter of a short walk.
Finding merchandise is like vacation to her. Working on her listings in her “overgrown playhouse” is a daily pleasure

If you love it, it’s not work

Coleman’s son recently asked her if she was ever going to retire.
“What would I do?” she responded. “I am already retired. If you love what you do, you’ll never have to work again.”
Finding merchandise is like vacation to her, the eBay seller notes. Working on her listings in her “overgrown playhouse” is a daily pleasure, and if she wants to take a day off, she’ll do it without guilt.
